The good and the noble

Gustaf Fröding

From the poetry collection Nya dikter, first published in 1894.

I will not be noble, I will not be good,
the good and the noble they set up their stand
in the most beautiful lighting on the highest pedestal
with an inscription of achievements in the corner of his hall.

Then they stand and contemplate their beloved image,
how noble is the mine, how good and gentle and mild,
they think in their heart: si, everything is quite good!
- but behind it stands Hin evil and coughs a little.
