Zacharias Topelius was a Finnish-Swedish writer, historian, newspaperman and poet who belonged to an old Ostrobothnian family.

Topelius was first known by his contemporaries as a lyricist in the spirit of Romanticism (Ljungblommoror I, 1845), but he is probably best remembered by posterity as a writer of historical novels, most notably The stories of the field cutters, and author of children's literature. Topelius had a long-lasting influence as a textbook writer, for example by. The book about our country (1875) was used in Finnish schools into the 20th century.
