An old map of the population of southern and central Sweden, prepared by the Railway Survey Committee in 1859. This was about 10 years before the miscarriage years 1867-69 hit, and emigration to North America increased dramatically. Each square is equal to one square mile.
In 1859 King Oscar I, and is succeeded as King of Sweden and Norway by his son Charles XV. It is also the year when the writer and poet Verner von Heidenstam was born.
In 1859, the liberal morning paper Göteborgs-Posten and in the same year Swedish women were given the right to hold certain teaching posts and to engage in retail trade in town and at the market and to run a trading stall in the country (married women only with their husband's permission).
