Source, 1898

Carl Larsson's watercolour painting The Bridge (1898) was one of 24 paintings in the book A Home (1899), with which Carl Larsson wanted to show how to decorate his home well. The book opens with a text in which Larsson describes his family life in the cottage Lilla Hyttnäs in the village of Sundborn outside Falun. This is followed by 24 watercolour paintings depicting scenes from the house and the Larsson family's life.

Carl Larsson says this about the painting The Bridge in A Home:

Yet you, like grandfather and grandmother in the picture, thunder over the bridge into Sundborn's church village.

The rapids roar beneath you, and in the channel the timber descends with dizzying speed to Korsnäs and Runn.

So you peel through the horrible debris and smoking heaps of dung, across the neighbour's backyard, through my little green gate, where the hens, terrified, come out of their nap.
