This map of Ångermanland comes from Hülphers, Abraham Abrahamsson, "Samlingar til en beskrifning öfwer Norrland" from the year 1780. Ångermanland is an old settlement. This is evidenced by the many mounds from the Late Iron Age that extend as far as Resele parish, almost 100 kilometres from the sea. Angermannaland, or Angaria as the country is called when it is first mentioned in writing in the late 12th century in the Latin source Historia Norvegiæ, takes its name from the Old Norse enter which means 'fjord, sea bay' and originally referred to the lower part of the Ångermanälven. This root shares Ångermanland with the towns of Häggdånger and Enånger, and also with Norwegian settlements such as Hardanger and Stavanger.
