Bårby castle on southern Öland in Mörbylånga parish was built during the Migration period in the 400-700s and was used until the 17th century.
Bårby castle is one of Öland's 20 known ancient castles, and the only one that makes use of a natural mountain slope in the fortification. The castle is 150 metres in diameter and consists of a stone wall in the shape of a semicircle.
Bårby castle was inhabited during the Migration Period and later during the Middle Ages, just like two other ancient castles on Öland, Eketorp and Gråborg. Until the 17th century, the castle was used to defend against pirates from the Baltic States.
The most significant find from excavations is a gold coin minted for the Byzantine emperor Justinus I, who reigned between 518 and 527.
